How to Make the Most of Soggy Disney Days
If you’re planning a Walt Disney World vacation, there’s one thing you can almost guarantee — at some point, it will rain. ☔ Florida weather loves its afternoon showers!
But here’s the good news: a rainy Disney day does not have to be a bad day. In fact, some of my favorite park memories have happened in the rain. Crowds shift, lines change, and if you’re prepared, you can actually accomplish a lot.
Here’s exactly what to do when the skies open up.
🌧 First: Don’t Panic — Most Rain Is Short
In Orlando, rain often comes in bursts. A heavy afternoon shower might last 30–60 minutes and then clear up beautifully. Instead of leaving the park, use the rain strategically.
This is where flexibility becomes your superpower.
🏰 Magic Kingdom Rainy Day Plan
Magic Kingdom actually has a great mix of indoor attractions.
Best Indoor Rides & Attractions:
Pirates of the Caribbean
Haunted Mansion
“it’s a small world”
Mickey’s PhilharMagic
Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor
Country Bear Musical Jamboree
Hall of Presidents
These rides keep you indoors for extended periods — perfect during downpours.
Bonus Strategy:
When rain starts, many guests run for cover or leave. If you wait it out inside an attraction, you may find shorter wait times afterward.
🌐 EPCOT Rain Strategy
EPCOT might be the best rainy park because of how many attractions are indoors.
Head to:
Spaceship Earth
The Seas with Nemo & Friends
Living with the Land
Mission: SPACE
Gran Fiesta Tour (Mexico Pavilion)
Frozen Ever After (Norway Pavilion)
World Showcase pavilions are mostly indoors too — shops, galleries, exhibits, and films are all great rain shelters.
Pro Tip:
Rainy afternoons are a perfect excuse to slow down and snack your way around the world.
🎬 Hollywood Studios Rain Plan
Hollywood Studios has several indoor shows that are perfect during storms.
Great Indoor Options:
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway
Star Tours
Walt Disney Presents
Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular
For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration
Shows are fantastic because they last 20–30 minutes and give you a full rain break.
🌿 Animal Kingdom Rain Tips
Animal Kingdom can feel trickier because many attractions are outdoors — but you still have good options.
Head Indoors To:
Festival of the Lion King
Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!
DINOSAUR
Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail (great in light rain)
Rain can actually make Animal Kingdom feel cooler and more comfortable temperature-wise.
🎒 What to Pack for Rainy Days
Here’s what I always recommend bringing:
Lightweight ponchos (buy before you go to save money!)
Small travel umbrella
Waterproof phone pouch
Extra socks
Cooling towel (still useful even in rain!)
Zip-top bags for electronics
Avoid heavy rain jackets — Florida heat + humidity = uncomfortable.
💡 Smart Rain Strategies
1. Use Rain to Ride Popular Attractions
Some outdoor rides close temporarily in lightning, but many indoor rides stay open. Watch the My Disney Experience app and jump in line when wait times drop.
2. Shift Dining Plans
If rain hits near a meal time, see if you can grab a quick-service table indoors and relax. Rain is the perfect excuse for a longer break.
3. Shop Smart
Main Street U.S.A. and many park areas connect via indoor stores. You can move surprisingly far without getting soaked.
4. Stay Flexible
The families who enjoy Disney the most are the ones who adapt.
✨ The Hidden Magic of Rain
There’s something special about walking down Main Street with the pavement glistening. Castle photos in the rain can be absolutely beautiful. And sometimes those rainy evenings turn into lower crowd levels and shorter lines.
Rain doesn’t ruin a Disney day — it just changes the strategy.
And that’s exactly what I help my clients prepare for! 💙
